Position Posting – Farm Director (FT)
Organization Overview
MISSION: Greenagers works to inspire children and young adults to develop deep connections to land, work, and community. We prepare youth for success in work and life by offering paid jobs and education in the areas of conservation, sustainable farming, and related trades.
VISION: Greenagers envisions a culture of community where young people work together to restore forests and fields, grow food, and build spaces that support natural systems and sustainability.
To realize this vision, we work to get young people outside; working with their hands; talking to each other and their elders; listening, leading, and learning. We believe that this work is foundational and the heart of a culture that values education, stewardship, and community.
Based in Egremont, Massachusetts, Greenagers has grown significantly over the past few years. April Hill Conservation and Education Center serves as our home base and as a community and educational resource. As our programs continue to grow, we seek a dedicated Farm Director who will continue producing high quality farm products and bringing youth into that process on a regular basis.
Position Overview
The Farm Director holds the vision and oversight for Greenagers’ April Hill Farm. This farm employs youth, trains aspiring farmers, and welcomes student, school, and community groups to the farm to be active participants in sustainable agriculture. The Farm Director is the lead steward of about 2 acres of low/no-till vegetable cultivation and one high-tunnel greenhouse/propagation house. The Director also works with other members of the Greenagers team to manage the Community Firewood Bank, apple orchard, and help hold the
vision of community access to the 100-acre historic farmstead that is April Hill Conservation and Education Center.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Recruit, hire, and supervise year-round and seasonal farm positions, including summer youth crews.
Manage the annual Front Lawn Food program–installing and planting raised bed vegetable gardens with youth crews for community members.
Expand program reach—both geographically and demographically—through strategic partnership-building and outreach..
Lead or help coordinate community workshops, volunteer events, and youth programming at April Hill Farm.
Collaborate across departments to align programming with Greenagers’ broader organizational goals and initiatives.
Represent Greenagers at local and regional outreach events, strengthening
relationships with schools, partner organizations, and families while promoting the organization’s mission.
The Farm Director must care deeply about positive youth development and sustainable agriculture. Their primary strengths should be in farming and growing but a strong desire to share this knowledge with young people is essential. The Director has a lot of freedom in how to combine these two elements and has the support of other Program Directors, including our
Education Director.
This position requires the ability to make responsive, thoughtful decisions in dynamic environments—balancing logistical management, the unpredictability within agriculture, and youth-centered care. The Farm Director should model flexibility, competency, empathy, and professionalism, ensuring high quality farm products and that each co-worker and participant feels seen, heard, and valued.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS
Proficiency with Google Workspace and database systems.
SPECIALIZED SKILLS AND/OR TRAINING
Greenagers offers training in Positive Youth Development and Safety as well as Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging trainings- these are important for the organization and the youth we serve. The Farm Director is encouraged to identify and pursue additional professional development opportunities to enhance staff capacity, farming practices, and equity within the program.
Experience with low and no-till farm management is desired as well as interest in contributing to sustainable local food systems that prioritize nutrient-dense food with access for all to food production, distribution, and eating.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The balance between field work and administrative work is roughly equal over the course of the year with more field work in the growing season and more office work in the off-season. The structures of time and team management are largely at the discretion of the Farm Director.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This is farming on a hand and light mechanical scale. We strive to make the farming space and practices accessible to as many body types, skill sets, and comfort levels as possible.
