    Description

    The Southern Service Workers Education Fund seeks a Strategic Campaigner based in Atlanta. This full-time, paid position will be on the front lines of low-wage worker organizing in the south and focused on supporting an organizing campaign led by the Union of Southern Service Workers engaging impacted communities.

    The Strategic Campaigner will be part of a program with Powered to Win (P2W) designed to develop the necessary skills to be an effective strategic campaigner in social justice movement work in the South. The Strategic campaigner will work as part of the USSW campaign team while receiving ongoing training to help develop and deepen their strategic campaigning, and research knowledge, and will be directly engaged in campaigns taking on corporate power. The strategic campaigner will have a mentor in the field, multiple trainers, and supervising staff..

    The Southern Service Workers Education Fund is seeking candidates for the strategic campaigner position from organizational memberships, universities and community colleges, community organizations, and activists. Some community and/or worker organizing experience, as well as exposure to conducting research, is required. Background in student, labor, community, and/or immigrant rights movement work is a definite plus. Those most impacted by systems of oppression, including but not limited to Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color (BIPOC), women, women of color, immigrants, and people who have spent time in the carceral system, are encouraged to apply.

    The ideal candidate for this position is a strategic thinker who understands power dynamics and can analyze relationships. They should be able to negotiate the online world of information as well as be comfortable communicating with everyone from workers to community leaders to government officials. The strategic campaigner should be someone comfortable receiving regular feedback and evaluation. Flexibility is required for evening and weekend work.This is a hybrid position with some in-person and field work. Access to reliable transportation is required. Occasional out-of-state travel will also be required. Candidates must be located in the Atlanta metro area.

    Responsibilities include:

    • Conducting strategic research and analysis of key corporate, nonprofit, and institutional actors, companies, political figures and industries, among others;
    • Developing and implementing strategies and tactics in consultation with campaign team;
    • Writing letters, public records requests, memos, reports, white papers, and other documents as needed;
    • Developing public facing documents such as press releases, fact sheets, research summaries;
    • Strategizing tactics with communications staff to use research to shift perception of key audiences (low wage workers, organizers, customers)
    • Working with impacted leaders, communications staff, and campaign team to create campaign messaging documents working with impacted leaders; organizers, communication staff, and campaign coordinators;
    • Helping coordinate campaign strategies in consultation with directors and organizers;
    • Developing and maintaining comprehensive campaign planning and tracking documents;
    • Planning, developing materials for, and executing activities including delegations, rallies, meetings, protests, and direct actions as part of campaign teams

    Salary is at least $65,000/year commensurate with experience. The position will offer benefits including fully covered medical, dental and vision insurance for individual and family; 401(K); and paid time off. This position is currently funded for one year with potential to extend should the candidate excel and continued funding allow.
