    Description

Position Summary: The Freetown Farm Lead is a full-time, hands-on role responsible for the day-to-day implementation of farm operations at Freetown Farm. This position focuses on crop production, ecological stewardship, volunteer and partner coordination, and on-site leadership, ensuring that farm activities are executed effectively, safely, and in alignment with CEI’s mission and programmatic goals. This role is ideal for a skilled, self-directed practitioner who enjoys working outdoors, coordinating people and systems, and translating plans into action. The Farm Lead works closely with the Nourishing Gardens Program Manager and other CEI staff but does not hold primary responsibility for staff supervision, budgeting, or organizational strategy.

    Key Responsibilities:

Farm Operations & Production (Primary Focus)

    • Implement seasonal farm, garden and crop plans, and associated work schedules developed in collaboration with CEI leadership.
    • Lead daily on-farm activities including planting, cultivation, harvesting, irrigation, and general field and greenhouse management.
    • Ensure crops are grown and harvested using ecological, regenerative, and food-safety–informed practices.
    • Track production, yields, and operational notes as requested to support reporting and planning.
    • Maintain clear systems for task scheduling, tool use, and seasonal workflows.
    • Identify operational challenges and propose practical solutions to the Program Manager.

    Volunteer & Program Implementation Support

    • Prepare the farm for volunteer shifts and partner activities (set-up, task planning, materials, safety orientation).
    • Serve as a primary on-site lead for volunteer days, group visits, and partner use of the farm, and coordinate with other staff.
    • Provide guidance and supervision to volunteers, interns, and program participants during farm activities.
    • Support Chesapeake Conservation Corps members or similar program participants through mentorship and task leadership on the farm.

    Community Partner Coordination

    • Support community partners and organizations using Freetown Farm by coordinating schedules, access, and expectations.
    • Help ensure MOUs, farm-use guidelines, and site protocols are followed during partner activities.
    • Foster a welcoming, inclusive, and educational environment for all visitors to the farm.
    • Represent Freetown Farm positively and professionally during on-site programs, tours, and community engagement activities.

    Ecological Stewardship & Compliance

    • Implement best practices for soil health, habitat stewardship, and sustainable land management.
    • Support compliance with required agricultural plans and licenses (e.g., nutrient management plans, nursery licensing), in coordination with CEI leadership.
    • Monitor infrastructure, tools, and equipment; report maintenance needs and assist with upkeep as appropriate.
    • Work collaboratively with CEI staff to ensure the farm remains safe, functional, and well-maintained.

    Organizational Collaboration

    • Coordinate closely with CEI program staff to integrate farm operations with education, ecology, health, and climate initiatives.
    • Share regular updates on farm conditions, progress, and needs with the Nourishing Gardens Program Manager.
    • Support grant-funded activities and data collection related to farm operations as requested (implementation-focused, not grant writing).
    • Collaborate with communications staff by providing photos, updates, or on-site support for outreach and storytelling when needed.

    Qualifications:

    • Preference for associate’s or bachelor’s degree in agricultural business, horticulture, or a related field.
    • Hands-on experience in small-scale or diversified farming, market gardening, or ecological land management.
    • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks in a seasonal, outdoor work environment.
    • Experience working with volunteers, interns, or community groups.
    • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and community-centered environmental work.
    • Ability to work year round outdoors in a range of weather conditions and frequently lift materials over 40 lbs.
    • Valid driver’s license, a clean driving record, and reliable transportation.

    Work Schedule & Compensation:

    • This is a full-time, salaried position with a pay range of $41,600 - $45,760 commensurate with experience and qualifications. This range reflects the expected responsibilities of the role and CEI’s commitment to pay equity and transparency.

    Application & Interview Process:

To apply, please complete our application form, including uploading a cover letter and current resume, by February 15, 2026.

Qualified candidates will be contacted to schedule an interview. Interviews are planned for the end of February, with the goal of having the successful candidate begin on March 2, 2026.
