    Description

    About GFADP

Georgians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty educates, advocates, and engages communities with the goal of ending the death penalty in Georgia. We envision a Georgia without the death penalty - a state where justice is no longer defined by violence, but by dignity, accountability, and a shared commitment to humanity, and where responses to harm center healing, redemption, and responsibility.

    This moment

GFADP is entering an exciting and defining chapter. After a year of thoughtful work, the Board has sharpened our strategy and clarified how we show up in the movement. Our staff structure includes the Executive Director and a new full-time Conservative Organizer (who will focus on communities outside metro Atlanta).

Our next phase is rooted in the trusted-messenger model: equipping people within their own communities to lead the conversation about ending the death penalty. GFADP collaborates closely with many partners and is well positioned to be the glue that brings this movement together.

    The Role

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for ensuring GFADP meets its mission and financial objectives. The ideal candidate is deeply committed to ending the death penalty and, preferably, brings lived experience with the criminal legal system (either directly or through a loved one). Strong leadership is essential, particularly in managing relationships across diverse stakeholder groups, collaborating effectively with a volunteer board, and setting and advancing a clear organizational vision. Proven fundraising experience is required, including success with both individual donors and foundations.

Given the small team structure, the Executive Director is expected to:

    • Implement the organization’s strategic plan
    • Lead programmatic work, including managing relationships with partner organizations and faith leaders engaged in ending the death penalty in Georgia
    • Serve as the primary fundraiser, with support from the Board of Directors, deepening existing donor relationships and cultivating new ones
    • Create and manage the organizational budget to ensure strong financial stewardship with support from a contracted bookkeeper
    • Oversee the full-time staff member and contractors
    • Engage the Board of Directors, developing and leveraging their expertise to advance the mission
    • Act as the public face and spokesperson for the organization
    • Ensure compliance with grant requirements, legal obligations, and relevant regulations

While not exhaustive, this list highlights the ongoing activities central to the Executive Director’s role.

    Required skills/experiences:

    • Deep commitment to ending the death penalty in Georgia
    • Experience working in Georgia or another Southern state with a similar political and cultural landscape
    • Demonstrated leadership experience, including working with diverse stakeholders and collaborating with a board of directors
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills
    • Proven fundraising experience, particularly with grants and individual donors
    • Comfort working across different political spectrums and beliefs
    • Ability to work independently in a remote environment while staying connected to a statewide team.
    • Religious literacy to navigate situations where religious beliefs provide motivation to end the death penalty
    • Proficiency with Google Workspace, Zoom, and social media platforms.

    Preferred skills/experience:

    • Lived experience with the criminal legal system, whether through incarceration, having a loved one impacted, or being a survivor of violent crime
    • Experience working to end the death penalty or in a closely related field
    • Experience in movement building, whether through volunteer work or professional roles
    • Knowledge of the death penalty process and how death sentences are administered

Time Off: 15 days of paid time off in Year 1, in addition to 15 paid holidays

    Location

This is a fully remote position, as GFADP does not maintain a physical office. Regular travel to meetings in metro Atlanta and other locations across Georgia is required. Occasional travel elsewhere in the United States may also be necessary for professional development and relevant conferences.
