Alliance to Reclaim Our Schools - Prince George's County

The Alliance to Reclaim Our Schools - Prince George’s (AROS-PG) is a chapter of the national Alliance to Reclaim Our Schools, which is a coalition that includes both national teachers’ unions (AFT and NEA), the national Service Employees International Union (SEIU) four networks of community organizing groups (Journey for Justice Alliance, Gamaliel Foundation, People’s Action and Center for Popular Democracy), a national youth organizing network (Alliance for Educational Justice) and three national research/advocacy organizations (the NYU Metro Center, the Advancement Project, and the Schott Foundation for Public Education).

Locally, AROS-PG includes as its core members: CASA (de Maryland), Progressive Maryland, Prince George’s County Educators’ Association (PGCEA) , PG Changemakers, and Community Youth Advance.

Because building fabulous Community Schools is a key principle, AROS-PG is committed to working with the office of Community Schools in Prince George’s County to use our organizing skills to help ensure that all stakeholders have the knowledge and skills to authentically participate in the creation and sustainability of sustaining this outstanding model. 

To this end we are working to:

• Build parent, teacher, student and community teams to participate in and work in partnership with their school’s steering committees to focus on the underlying issues of the broader community.   
• Provide leadership development, issue-based and technical assistance-based workshops for teachers, parents, community school staff and administration, and community members.
• Provide a consistent parent and community perspective to all educational issues and policies in the county and state.
• Create an invested community base who will fight to maintain community schools in the county and the state.
• Leverage our relationships with national AROS organizations to link to resources - training, support, learning communities, research - to all stakeholders in the local community school community.
