Slow Food NYC is the New York City chapter of Slow Food, a global, grassroots organization, founded in 1989 to prevent the disappearance of local food cultures and traditions, counteract the rise of fast life, and combat people’s dwindling interest in the food they eat, where it comes from and how our food choices affect the world around us. Simply put, we are the members of Slow Food who live in and around New York City. We, the members of Slow Food NYC, designate a steering committee to represent us, and to run the chapter's events and affairs. Slow Food NYC is entirely organized and run by volunteers-drawing talent, expertise, and ambition from our community.
Slow Food NYC supports the mission of Slow Food International and works closely with Slow Food USA, the national association headquartered in Brooklyn. Our organization is dedicated to the development of an equitable, just, and healthy local food system that truly works for all. We believe food is tied to many other aspects of life including culture, politics, agriculture, justice, health, and the environment. Through our food choices we can change the world by influencing how food is cultivated, produced, and distributed.
