About Us

Meeting House Nursery School, Inc. [MHNS] is the oldest, part-time play-based nursery school in Madison, Wisconsin.  MHNS was founded by two teachers 70 years ago. Today, we are a State Licensed and City Accredited program that annually educates approximately 170 children from two to five years old.  MHNS was the fourth program in Wisconsin to receive National Accreditation, and partners with Madison Metropolitan School District as a 4K certified site.

The Meeting House Nursery School philosophy is to provide children with a play-based curriculum in a welcoming environment that encourages exploration, experimentation, and child-led inquiry while encouraging curiosity and expression of ideas. Teachers plan a program that is developmentally appropriate, focusing on the “whole child” in terms of his/her social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development creating a foundation for life-long human development.

Meeting House Nursery School leases the west wing of the First Unitarian Society. The Landmark Auditorium was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, notable for his prairie style homes and organic architecture. It is a national landmark visited by architects, students, and tourists from around the world. The nursery school wing, added in 1963, was designed by the Taliesin Foundation to meet the special needs of the nursery and church school programs.
