About Us

The Hertie School’s Master of Public Policy (MPP) provides the tools tomorrow’s decision makers need to analyse policies, critically assess policy innovations and evaluate solutions. The programme offers an analytically challenging and problem-oriented education in governance, policy analysis, management and leadership, strengthened by real-world experience in the public and private sectors. It brings together perspectives from economics, political science, law and sociology, and trains students in quantitative and qualitative methodologies.

Specialise in one area of public policy

Students attend courses in economics, political science, statistics, public management and law.

Programme participants can choose between two concentrations:

  • Policy Analysis focuses on analytical methods and tools used to tackle modern governance challenges – such as statistics, econometrics or behavioural economics.
  • Management and Organisation explores competences such as strategy, change management and organisational design.

In addition, students complete courses from a wide portfolio of electives to deepen their expertise in a specific policy field. They apply their analytical skills by writing their master's thesis on a concrete policy problem.

A professional degree

As a professional school for governance, the Hertie School gives students several opportunities to apply what they learn and begin building a professional network. The Hertie School invites relevant professionals including alumni to its Professional Perspectives lecture series, and students are expected to complete a summer internship between their first and second year of study. Students who want to dive even deeper into a professional environment may opt for a Professional Year between the first and second year of the programme.

Study abroad

Exchange semesters and dual degree opportunities at top policy schools around the globe allow our students to expand their horizons and personal networks at institutions.
