St. HOPE Public Schools

About Us

St. HOPE, founded by NBA All-Star Kevin Johnson, is a national nonprofit community development company with the mission of revitalizing inner city communities through public education, civic leadership, economic development and the arts.

St. HOPE Public Schools (SHPS) opened its doors in 2003 with a clear vision: to create one of the finest urban pre-kindergarten through 12th grade public school systems in America. Our students attend longer school days, are held to high expectations for academics and behavior and focus on preparing to obtain a college degree.

We provide a unique network of schools that guides our students from preschool through high school to college. Students gradually build a foundation of academic achievement, community responsibility and inner confidence empowering them to become educated leaders within their communities. Our rigorous curriculum has closed the achievement gap and dramatically increased the number of graduates who go on to college.

The national statistics are daunting: Less than 40% of low-income students go to college. But at St. HOPE Public Schools, where the majority of our students are socioeconomically disadvantaged, we have not accepted that fate. In 2013, over 90% of our seniors were accepted to more than 75 colleges and universities across the United States. Our vision is that every one of our students will leave us prepared to complete college and we are working relentlessly with our students and families towards this goal.
