Governors for Schools

Governors for Schools is a charity that recruits and places volunteers onto school governing boards. We placed over 2,000 volunteers in the last year.

School governors work at board level, taking the needs of the pupils, staff and families into account and providing challenge to push standards forward. They seek the evidence behind the information they’re presented with and ask the important ‘why’ questions to encourage different ways of thinking and develop the school further. They also make sure that the school follows the strategic direction they’ve agreed and fulfils the values of the school.

Schools benefit from having people with external experience on the board so they can learn from a breadth and depth of other perspectives, not relying on the same assumptions and priorities of those involved with school on an everyday basis.

Being a school governor is a role that is open to experienced leaders and those earlier on in their careers. 

Governors for Schools is committed to promoting and prioritising diversity and inclusion. We particularly welcome applications from disabled people and people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds, as these groups are currently under-represented on governing boards.
