About Us

Teaching Residents at Teachers College (TR@TC) is an 18-month federally funded cohort-based teacher residency program at Columbia University's Teachers College. We are committed to supporting prospective teachers who feel passionate about being the best teachers for students in New York City public schools, especially in subject areas where there is the most need — including math, science, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), and special education.

At TR@TC, we are constantly connecting with our students. This includes an invitation to participate in the TR@TC Admissions Institute during the application process. In this two-day experience, applicants meet a variety of TR@TC community members and participate in various activities. It’s a time where we get to know you and where you get to know us.

Once accepted, students (known as Teaching Residents) join a cohort of peers who act as learning partners and a support network throughout the program and beyond. From the beginning of the program, as a Teaching Resident, you will immediately connect with NYC public school teachers and collaborate with them to support student learning in NYC public school classrooms. As you prepare for your year-long residency experience, you’ll work closely with TR@TC staff to be paired with Mentor Teachers and a Residency Supervisor — experienced educators who are deeply committed to your growth on an individualized level. Preparation for the fall also includes rich and interactive summer workshops that lay the groundwork for you to be prepared to begin your year-long residency experience.

Our commitment to our teachers doesn't end at graduation. After earning a master's degree and New York state dual certification, you'll enter our two-year TR@TC Induction Program. You’ll work with TR@TC staff to be paired with an Induction Mentor who will support you in learning to navigate the joys and challenges of working in NYC public schools for your first years of teaching.

We seek applicants who envision having long careers as teachers in NYC public schools and to aid in this, we offer over $70,000 in financial supports to participants of the program. These are paired with a three-year agreement to teach in NYC public schools. Currently, in our 11th year, we are proud of our graduates, most of whom are still teaching in NYC public schools and who continue to return to work with us by mentoring, leading workshops, and contributing to our TR@TC community.
