    Description

    Director at Large, Celiac Edmonton

The Director at Large (DAL) is a member of the board of a registered non-profit society. Celiac Edmonton is a Chapter of Celiac Canada, dedicated to providing service and support to persons with celiac disease, dermatitis herpetiformis and gluten intolerance, through awareness, education, events and research support. The Chapter hosts a number of events annually, with a focus on supporting people newly diagnosed with celiac disease, raising awareness of celiac disease and the challenges of a gluten-free lifestyle, family, community and all-ages events, as well as fundraising.

All board positions are two-year terms. Board members can run for multiple terms, with no term limits. Board members must be a member of the Canadian Celiac Association Edmonton Chapter (Celiac Edmonton), however, do not need to be celiac or suffer from any other gluten-related disorder.

The DAL works with the board as a whole to manage Celiac Edmonton affairs. The DAL attends monthly board meetings, and other committee meetings as required. The DAL role is an important volunteer leadership role for the Chapter, requiring up to 20 hours per month, depending on time of year, and the type of projects and initiatives underway and the number of committees the DAL chooses to participate on.

    The DAL is responsible for:

    • Attending Board Meetings:
      • Board members are expected to attend monthly board meetings (virtual or in-person). Meetings are on the third Tuesday of each month, and last 1 – 2 hours.
      • Board members are expected to come prepared to meetings, having read all meeting materials and additional related materials if needed. Board members should come to meetings with motions prepared (if needed) and questions or comments prepared, related to the subject matter.
    • Participating in Board meetings:
      • Board Members are expected to speak up and speak their minds.
      • We need everyone’s thoughts, ideas and perspectives to achieve the best results for Celiac Edmonton and our members.
    • Organising and attending events:
      • Celiac Edmonton currently hosts three major events per year, along with several other program events.
      • Board members are expected to help with the planning, implementation and hosting of at least one event per year. Board members should attend as many events as they are able.
    • Other duties as assigned by the Board.
      • Participate on, or chair, at least one committee of the Board.
      • Participate on and/or chair, additional committees of the board as time and personal interest allow.
      • Volunteer for and/or attend events hosted by Celiac Edmonton (i.e. May Awareness, Pancake Breakfast, Ride Walk Run, Community Christmas Party, others).
      • Read and provide feedback on documents as requested by the board or committees, including indicating you have read the document and have no comments/feedback.
    • Time Commitment:
      • The time commitment for a Celiac Edmonton Board member varies, depending upon the number of activities a Board member chooses to participate in.
      • Time committed to the Board will require up to 20 hours per month, including:
        • A minimum of 2 – 4 hours per month for meetings and preparation time,
        • A few hours per week to address Celiac Edmonton email, etc, and
        • Additional time will be required to support event planning and participate in events when they occur.
