    Description

Hopelink is looking for volunteer career advisers for the English for Work program!

Fall quarter is already underway, so we are looking for advisers for our winter and spring quarters. The next New Adviser Onboarding sessions will be held in January and April 2026.

About English for Work and the Adviser Role

English for Work is a quarter-long English language program, designed for immigrants and refugees who are planning to get a job (or a better job) or enroll in college/job training in the next six months or so. In the class, students improve English listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills while learning about U.S. work culture, career goal setting, resume writing, and interview preparation.

Each adviser is assigned 2-3 students for the quarter. Advisers work one-on-one with their assigned students, supporting them in setting short-term and long-term career goals, resume writing, English practice, applying for jobs, and preparing for job interviews. Advisers primarily meet with students virtually, with occasional in-person opportunities at local libraries or other local public meeting spaces if student transportation allows.

This is a great role for working folks because the meeting schedules can be flexible. It’s also great for recently retired folks who are looking for ways to give back to the community and share their industry expertise!

We provide training and support to volunteers throughout the quarter.

    Adviser Requirements:

      • Must be enthusiastic about connecting with students virtually and comfortable using technology (Zoom is the most common mode for advising meetings, accessible to those with busy schedules and transportation barriers).
      • Have at least 3 years of U.S. work experience with some knowledge about the job market and the job search process.
      • Excellent interpersonal skills with strong ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and respectfully with immigrants and refugees who are developing their English language skills.
      • Commitment to anti-racism, being equitable and inclusive to all, and to practicing cultural humility.
      • Available to meet with their advisees at least 3-6 times during the quarter.
      • Able to commit to advising for at least two quarters (about six months).
