    Description

    Volunteer Literacy Coach

Volunteer as a Literacy Coach with Achieve Now

Help a child become a confident reader—just one hour a week!

    Who We Are

Achieve Now is a Philadelphia-based social justice organization that sees literacy as the mechanism to effect social change. We work with K-2 students in Philadelphia schools, providing high-quality, culturally responsive literacy instruction that helps them become joyful, capable, lifelong readers.

We center connection, joy, and equity in everything we do. We affirm our students’ identities and use an approach to literacy that reflects the many ways people use language—in art, in community, in self-expression, and in learning.

    Why We Do This Work

We know that early literacy opens doors. And we also know that access to strong literacy instruction hasn’t been equal. Our one-on-one tutoring program helps close that gap.

Using a research-based curriculum, trained volunteer coaches work with a first or second grade student once a week. Together, they build foundational reading skills—from letter sounds to decoding and fluency—in a supportive, affirming environment that encourages effort, growth, and confidence.

Your Role as a Volunteer Coach

As a coach, you’ll meet virtually with the same student once a week for one hour, between October and May. Sessions take place during the school day over Zoom, and you’ll be guided every step of the way by one of our trained literacy instructors. No teaching experience? No problem. We provide all the training and materials you’ll need—including a fun and easy-to-follow scripted curriculum.

    What We’re Looking For

You don’t need to be an educator—you just need to care. The best coaches are:

    • Reliable – Your student will be excited to see you each week. Showing up consistently is one of the most important parts of this role.
    • Open to Learning – We use a structured curriculum and offer feedback to help you grow in the role. A growth mindset—believing we can all improve with effort—is something we teach and model.
    • Comfortable with Basic Tech – You’ll need to know how to use Zoom and either PowerPoint or Google Slides, including how to share your screen.
    • Good with Kids – Experience working with children is helpful but not required. If you can bring warmth, patience, and a sense of fun, you’ll be a great fit.
