    About Mentor A Promise

    Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City–based nonprofit serving children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability through mentorship, literacy, education, social-emotional learning (SEL), and creative expression. MAP’s in-person programming provides safe, consistent, and supportive spaces where students can learn, grow, and build meaningful relationships.

    About PromiseRooted | In-Person Program

    PromiseRooted delivers in-person academic and social-emotional learning programs in partnership with shelters, schools, and community spaces across NYC. The program focuses on creating stability, fostering belonging, and helping students build confidence and academic skills.

    Role Overview

    We are seeking a Teacher to support in-person educational programming for students participating in PromiseRooted. This role blends academic support, mentoring, and relationship-building to create a welcoming, engaging, and supportive learning environment.

    Teachers help students strengthen academic skills while fostering confidence, curiosity, and emotional well-being.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Plan and facilitate engaging learning sessions for students
    • Provide academic support in literacy, math, and foundational skills
    • Support social-emotional learning through relationship-centered teaching
    • Create a safe, inclusive, and trauma-informed learning environment
    • Collaborate with mentors and program staff during sessions
    • Adapt instruction to meet diverse learning needs and abilities
    • Maintain timely, professional responsiveness via email and chat in Google Workspace

    Qualifications

    • Experience working with children or youth in educational settings
    • Strong communication and classroom facilitation skills
    • Patience, empathy, and a supportive teaching approach
    • Ability to create inclusive and encouraging learning environments
    • Alignment with MAP’s mission and dignity-centered values

    Preferred Skills

    • Teaching, tutoring, mentoring, or youth program experience
    • Familiarity with trauma-informed or SEL-informed practices
    • Experience working in nonprofit, afterschool, or community programs
    • Experience supporting students from diverse backgrounds

    Commitment

    • Volunteer role
    • Approximately 5–10 hours per week
    • Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
    • In-person in New York City
