    Social Media Lead (Volunteer)

    Organization: Mentor A Promise (MAP)

    Division: Storytelling & Media

Location: Remote and/or New York City

    Type: Volunteer (Unpaid)

    About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability in New York City. Through mentorship, academic enrichment, literacy development, social-emotional learning, creative expression, and community-centered storytelling, MAP creates safe and empowering spaces where young people can thrive.

The Storytelling & Media Division leads MAP’s digital presence, narrative strategy, and public communications — uplifting youth voices, sharing program impact, and shaping how communities understand housing instability, mentorship, and hope.

    About the Role

We are seeking a Social Media Lead to oversee and elevate MAP’s digital platforms, brand presence, and content strategy. This role will manage our overall social media ecosystem, coordinate with multiple MAP divisions, and ensure that our public storytelling reflects our mission, values, and community impact.

The Social Media Lead will collaborate with program staff, the policy team, Thread & Promise (fashion), PromisePress (publishing), youth creators, and MAP leadership to build a unified, powerful digital voice.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Lead MAP’s social media strategy across Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, Threads, and emerging platforms.
    • Oversee the creation, scheduling, and publishing of content for all MAP divisions.
    • Manage a team of volunteer content creators, editors, photographers, and media contributors.
    • Develop cohesive storytelling that reflects MAP’s mission, youth experiences, and program achievements.
    • Collaborate with MAP staff to highlight events, workshops, campaigns, and impact stories.
    • Ensure brand consistency in messaging, visuals, and tone across all platforms.
    • Track analytics, engagement, and audience growth trends to refine strategy.
    • Coordinate cross-platform campaigns for MAP initiatives (MAP Roots, MAP Connect, PromisePlay, Thread & Promise, PromisePress, The Bells I Hear, Threads of Voices, YouTube content, etc.).
    • Manage digital calendars and ensure timely posting aligned with organizational priorities.
    • Engage with audiences, respond to comments, and help maintain a supportive online community.
    • Check and respond to emails daily, with responses within 48 hours.
    • Take responsibility for performance improvement by incorporating data, user feedback, and leadership notes.

    Qualifications

    • Experience managing multi-platform social media for a nonprofit, brand, creative project, or mission-driven organization.
    • Strong understanding of digital storytelling, content strategy, and social media trends.
    • Excellent writing, communication, visual curation, and digital organization skills.
    • Ability to lead volunteers and collaborate across multiple teams and creative divisions.
    • Experience creating or managing short-form video content (Reels, TikTok) preferred.
    • Commitment to youth empowerment, equity, and culturally responsive storytelling.

    Bonus Skills (not required)

    • Experience with Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, CapCut, or social management platforms.
    • Photography, videography, or digital editing experience.
    • Familiarity with nonprofit communications or advocacy storytelling.
    • Bilingual or multilingual skills.

    Commitment

    • Volunteer role requiring 5–10 hours per week.
    • Minimum 6-month commitment preferred.
    • Remote with optional in-person events, filming days, or workshops in New York City.

    What You’ll Gain

    • Hands-on leadership experience managing social media for a growing nonprofit.
    • Opportunities to shape MAP’s narrative voice and digital identity across platforms.
    • Collaboration with youth creators, program teams, designers, and media partners.
    • A robust portfolio of mission-driven content and campaigns.
    • Professional development, mentorship, and leadership opportunities.
    • Letters of recommendation and professional references.
