Volunteer Tutor – Make a Difference at Amidon Bowen Elementary!

    About Northstar Tutoring

Northstar Tutoring’s mission is to help low-income and underserved K–12 students in the D.C. area reach their full potential by overcoming barriers to academic and personal success. Through free, one-on-one tutoring and mentoring, we match each student with a dedicated volunteer who provides consistent academic support, encouragement, and personal attention throughout the school year.

Tutoring sessions are held every Monday and Wednesday from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. Most volunteers commit to one day per week, though you are welcome to attend both days if your schedule allows!

Each volunteer is paired with the same student for the full school year, giving you the opportunity to build a meaningful and lasting relationship. Week after week, you will see your student grow in confidence and skill. During sessions, tutors work one-on-one using math or reading materials provided by Northstar, with support and guidance from on-site staff. Students range from Kindergarten through fifth grade, and volunteers are welcome to share preferences for age group or subject area.

    Mentoring Opportunities

Beyond weekly tutoring, volunteers are encouraged, though not required, to participate in occasional mentoring activities. These can be simple and enjoyable, such as attending a movie, visiting a museum, going to a sporting event, or meeting at a local library for extra study time. Often, these shared experiences are what make the partnership especially meaningful.

    Flexible Options

If you are unable to commit weekly, you may serve as a substitute tutor to provide coverage when regular volunteers are unavailable. We accept new students year-round, so volunteers may sign up at any time. No prior tutoring or teaching experience is required. Most of our volunteers begin with no formal background in education, so we provide the materials and support needed for volunteers to feel comfortable and confident.

If this location or schedule does not work for you, Northstar has several additional sites in need of volunteers:
