    About Work on Climate

Work on Climate (WoCl) is a leading non-profit focused on building the workforce to solve climate change equitably and justly. You probably know us for our online community that has helped thousands of people find jobs and start companies, highlighted in most major business press, from Fast Company to New York Times. However, our work goes even farther, seeking to mobilize the entire workforce as a force for system-wide change.

Being part of our volunteer team means more than just joining a community. It’s an invitation to create real-world impact by confronting urgent climate challenges with the skilled minds ready to solve them. Together, we’re bridging the talent gap to build the climate-focused economy we envision.

    What We Need:

We’re currently looking for a Co-Team Lead to join the People and Operations team and work closely with the current Team Lead for a few months before transitioning into the primary Team Lead role. This co-lead model ensures a smooth handoff of responsibilities, shared decision-making, and long-term continuity.

When the time comes for you to step away, you’ll follow the same model—bringing on a new co-lead and mentoring them into the role. If you’re energized by team leadership, people-centered systems, and building a strong, inclusive volunteer culture, we’d love to hear from you.

    About the team

The Member Experience team is responsible for creating a relational community* for our members—enabling career transitions into climate work, sharing crucial industry knowledge, and fostering the connections that help members find jobs, launch climate ventures, or incorporate sustainability into their current roles.

    • In a relational community, as defined in

Relationality by David Jay, relationships form when people change one another in ways that persist over time. Unlike transactional environments, relational spaces facilitate deeper connections, creative collaboration, and resilient support networks. Your role will help foster this environment where meaningful change can occur between members.

    Role Summary

We’re seeking community moderators who can help maintain a vibrant, supportive, and relational community in our Slack workspace. This position is open as our community has grown significantly, and we need additional stewards to maintain the high quality of interaction that members expect. During your volunteer term, you’ll help members to abide by our community guidelines, identify and address situations in which they do not, and foster positive connections between members.

    Time commitment

5 hours/week consistently for the next 6 months.

Our current meeting schedule is weekly on Thursdays at 9am PT/12pm ET/6pm CET for 45 minutes, with additional asynchronous collaboration throughout the week.

Your availability needs to be compatible with PST (GMT-8) working hours.

    What’s in it for me?

Volunteering as part of the Member Experience Team means you will have a direct impact on the value people get out of the Work on Climate community and how much they will be encouraged and inspired to give back in return. In addition to playing a critical role in enabling the climate talent transition, you will get to:

    • Apply your skills to climate by managing a 30K+ Slack community dedicated to working on climate
    • Hone your conflict resolution and communication skills in a professional setting
    • Increase your climate literacy and build a strong climate network in your area of interest
    • Opportunities to pursue new methods of addressing community needs

    What will I do?

As a community moderator, you’ll serve as a relationship builder within the Work on Climate Slack workspace, creating an environment where meaningful connections flourish. Together with the other volunteers on the Member Experience team, you’ll help to transform our digital space into a true community that remains healthy and aligned with community values.

Your work will directly impact our goal of creating a relational community for our members—enabling career transitions into climate work, sharing crucial industry knowledge, and fostering the connections that help members find jobs, launch climate ventures, or incorporate sustainability into their current roles.

    Key responsibilities include:

    • Attending to member form responses (violation reports and requests for help)
    • Daily review of most active WoCl channels to ensure all posts follow community guidelines and channel purposes
    • Serving as a community connector who helps members find others with complementary interests or skills and implementing strategies to strengthen connections

What skills and commitment do I need?

You should be meticulous and have a knack for understanding different perspectives. The most effective candidates will have:

    • Interest in leading both day-to-day moderation and supporting long-term improvements to the community guidelines and moderation policies
    • Excellent individual and group communication skills, with the ability to work with people of different work and communication styles
    • Superior critical thinking skills to make nuanced judgments about what content is appropriate in specific contexts
    • Ability to identify and implement automation opportunities to streamline processes is a plus

    Common Challenges

    • Being empathetic, firm, and kind: Managing potentially difficult conversations with members who violate guidelines requires emotional intelligence and clear communication.
    • Consistency between team members: Everyone brings a different perspective to the work, but we need to be sure we are delivering a consistent user experience. Syncing up with your team members on why something is or isn’t moderated is important!
    • Balancing urgent tasks with long-term goals: Moderation comes with the need to balance urgent and important tasks. This role involves a mix of ongoing moderation and long-term strategic work, so you’ll need to balance when to focus on short-term needs (such as removing spam accounts when they’re reported) with longer-term needs (like developing moderation practices that complement our community engagement strategy).
