    Job Summary

    The Treasurer serves as the chief steward of the organization’s financial health and integrity. This role provides strategic oversight of all financial operations, ensuring transparency, accountability, and compliance with applicable laws and policies. While the Treasurer does not perform daily bookkeeping tasks, they are responsible for supervising and managing bookkeeping and accounting functions, whether performed internally or through external partners.

    Essential Duties and Functions

    Financial Oversight & Governance

    • Serve as a key member of the Board of Directors.
    • Provide strategic leadership and oversight of the organization’s financial policies, practices, risk management, and strategic plan.
    • Ensure accurate and timely financial reports are presented to the Board of Directors and other stakeholders.
    • Review and monitor the performance of the bookkeeper or contracted accounting firm to maintain strong financial controls.

    Budgeting & Reporting

    • Lead the Board of Directors in developing the annual operating budget.
    • Present budget recommendations to the Board for review and approval.
    • Monitor budget performance throughout the year, addressing variances and advising on corrective action.
    • Ensure regular financial reports (monthly, quarterly, and annual) are reviewed for accuracy and alignment with approved budgets.
    • Present the Statement of Financial Position (Balance Sheet), Statement of Activity (Income Statement), and Statement of Activity by Class at Board meetings.

    Compliance & Audit

    • Oversee the organization’s compliance with all relevant financial regulations and reporting requirements.
    • Oversee the preparation and filing of the annual Form 990 and coordinate with the contacted tax accounting firm.
    • Oversee the tax receipt process to ensure accuracy and compliance with IRS regulations.
    • Participate in the annual audit, review, or financial compilation, working closely with auditors and staff to ensure a transparent process.
    • Review audit results and present findings to the Board, recommending any needed improvements.
    • Complete the annual Sales and Use Tax filing accurately and timely.

    Cash Flow & Banking

    • Serve as an authorized co-signer on all financial accounts, ensuring dual control and separation of duties, and approve payments in accordance with the policy.
    • Oversee management of the organization’s cash flow to ensure adequate liquidity for operations and reserves.
    • Work with the bookkeeper to maintain appropriate financial documentation and reconcile accounts regularly.

    Strategic Financial Planning

    • Support long-term financial planning and sustainability efforts, including investment and reserve strategies.
    • Collaborate with leadership to assess financial implications of strategic initiatives, grants, and fundraising programs.
    • Contribute to the creation and evaluation of financial policies and internal controls.

    Fundraising & Development Support

    • Partner with the Board of Directors to align fundraising goals with financial planning.
    • Ensure proper financial tracking of restricted and unrestricted funds and compliance with donor intent.

    Qualifications

    • Proven experience in financial management, accounting, and/or nonprofit fiscal oversight.
    • Understanding of nonprofit accounting principles and fiduciary responsibilities.
    • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
    • Experience working with external auditors and financial service providers.
    • Familiarity with accounting software and financial reporting tools.
    • Ability to collaborate effectively with staff, board members, and external partners.

    Time Commitment

    • Attend all Board meetings (typically monthly or quarterly).
    • Provide periodic consultation and oversight as needed, averaging 5-10 hours per month, with more involvement needed during large-scale responses and December 31 fiscal year-end closing.
