    Description

Virtual English Teacher to Saharawi Refugees

    Sandblast Arts: Who We Are

Founded in 2005, Sandblast is a volunteer-led London-based charity dedicated to amplifying the voices of the Saharawi refugees of Western Sahara. Through creative education, skills-training, and the arts, we work to raise global awareness of their long struggle for self-determination. Our vision is a world where Saharawi culture is protected, celebrated, and given the recognition it deserves.

    What We Do

Our flagship programme, Desert Voicebox, is based in the Boudjour refugee camp in Algeria. Since 2016, it has offered pioneering after-school English and music education to young Saharawi children. Local teachers receive training and ongoing support from our volunteers, making Desert Voicebox the only extracurricular programme in the camps where children develop language skills, creative expression, confidence, and joy through learning.

    Why Volunteer With Sandblast?

Volunteering with Sandblast means becoming part of a mission-driven, close-knit team creating meaningful change in one of the world’s most overlooked refugee communities. You’ll gain hands-on teaching experience, support children and local women in developing key skills, and contribute to a programme that empowers Saharawi voices through education and creativity.

Your time and talents help foster confidence, connection, and cultural pride.

Virtual English Teacher (One-to-One) — Role Overview

As a Virtual English Teacher, you’ll work one-on-one with either a Level 4 Desert Voicebox student (ages 11–14, beginner level English) or with a local Saharawi woman who teaches in the programme (typically B1 level). Your role is to boost conversational ability, listening comprehension, and practical use of English through supportive, engaging sessions.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Teach English with a focus on conversation, listening, and everyday communication
    • Use real-life scenarios, role-plays, and practical language tasks
    • Adapt your approach to the learner’s level and learning style
    • Create a warm, encouraging environment to build confidence and motivation

    Qualifications

    • Experience teaching English to children or adults (1:1 experience ideal)
    • TEFL/TESL certification (or equivalent)
    • Strong adaptability and cultural sensitivity
    • Native or near-native fluency in English

    Time Commitment

    • Two 45-minute online sessions per week
    • 15–30 minutes of lesson planning per week
    • Minimum commitment of three months
