    Principal Software Engineer (Mahaska County, Iowa)

    Organization: AI Equity Alliance (AIEA)

    Location: Oskaloosa, IA (Mahaska County) – hybrid/in-person preferred

    Commitment: 5–10 hours per week

    Role Overview:

    The Principal Software Engineer serves as a local technical lead for the AIEA’s development efforts in Mahaska County, including the Community Resource Platform and AI Impact Center innovation projects. This senior volunteer role ensures high-quality software design, architecture, and mentoring for interns and students.

    Responsibilities:

    • Provide technical leadership and oversee software design/architecture.
    • Guide the implementation of scalable, secure, and privacy-first systems.
    • Mentor student developers and interns, reviewing code and fostering best practices.
    • Coordinate with AIEA leadership, interns, and remote developers to align on project milestones.
    • Represent AIEA’s technical vision in local community and partner meetings.

    Skills & Qualifications:

    • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience.
    • Strong background in full-stack development and systems architecture.
    • Familiarity with AI/ML integration (preferred but not required).
    • Proven ability to mentor junior developers and lead small teams.
    • Commitment to equity, ethics, and community-centered technology.
