    Description

    Make a Difference: Mentor a Homeless/ At-Risk Student in Decatur, GA!

    :: Quick Program Overview ::

    Volunteer mentors go through training and then are matched with a high school student who is currently at-risk or experiencing homelessness. (Some students are living without a parent or guardian). Mentors meet with their student mentee 2 times a month during their school lunch period (Mentee provides lunch for student). We meet in high schools in North and South Fulton Counties on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Mentors provide unconditional emotional support with a positive, non-judgmental attitude so that students have a safe place to share their struggles. When appropriate, mentors provide guidance in money and/or time management, planning, impulse control, how to prioritize tasks and other necessary life skills that youth are able to directly apply to their life. By providing emotional, educational and financial support, we are preparing our youth for graduation and for the successful transition into adulthood.

    Mentor a homeless or at-risk high schooler towards recognizing their potential and self-worth while also achieving academic, social, and life success!

    Mentor requirements:

    • Must be 24 years of age or older,
    • Must commit to meeting with their mentee 2x a month for the school year,
    • Must be sensitive to issues pertaining to youth homelessness and poverty, (guidance will be provided in this area)
    • AND must have strong desire to make a positive impact on a youth's life

    :: Program Mission ::

    To empower homeless, unaccompanied and at-risk high school students towards personal and educational achievement through positive, supportive adult mentoring relationships.

    :: Program Goals ::

    • Build self-esteem
    • Provide emotional and educational support
    • Help teach and practice the skills needed to transition successfully into adulthood
    • Keep kids connected and in school

    Only 25% of homeless kids graduate. Keeping kids in school = keeping them off the streets! Everyone has something to offer.
