    A Free Bird is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in New York City and operating fully remotely. We empower children diagnosed with cancer to explore their artistic passions through art, music, writing, acting, and other creative outlets. Artistic expression plays a powerful role in healing, resilience, and emotional growth, and our team works collaboratively to support this mission every day.

    Role Overview

    The HR Advisor serves as a strategic and advisory partner to A Free Bird’s Human Resources team. In this role, you will provide expert guidance on HR practices, policy development, compliance, and workforce planning. This position is ideal for an experienced HR professional who wants to contribute their expertise in a flexible, advisory capacity while supporting a mission-driven organization.

    The HR Advisor works closely with the HR Manager and leadership team to ensure HR practices align with organizational goals, legal standards, and best practices.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Provide professional HR guidance and recommendations on a range of people-related matters on an as-needed basis
    • Advise leadership on HR best practices, workforce planning, and organizational effectiveness
    • Review, update, and recommend improvements to HR policies and procedures to ensure compliance with current employment laws and regulations
    • Support the HR Manager and/or Director with strategic and operational HR decision-making
    • Offer guidance on employee relations, performance management, and volunteer engagement matters
    • Assist with the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of HR frameworks and processes
    • Monitor evolving HR legislation and industry trends, and advise leadership on potential impact
    • Contribute to organizational performance by aligning HR practices with A Free Bird’s mission and objectives

    Skills & Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field
    • 5+ years of professional experience in Human Resources or people operations
    • Strong knowledge of HR compliance, policy development, and employment best practices
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Ability to provide clear, practical guidance to leadership and cross-functional teams
    • Proficiency with Google Workspace (Gmail, Calendar, Meet) and standard HR documentation tools
    • Ability to work independently and provide support in an advisory, on-call capacity
