    Description

    Amazon Village Support Person

Amazon Pueblo’s mission is to enrich the quality of life of indigenous peoples of the Colombia Amazon by supporting the development of sustainable business, through the efforts of volunteerism.

We are looking for people who have an expertise in certain areas and are willing to take on a specific project or projects. These may range from being able to patiently and creatively teach English to setting up solar powered electrical systems and drilling wells. A more complete list of the specific projects that we need help with is found in our Volunteer Guide, in the Other Possible Projects section.

The volunteers pay for their own transportation, food, and special supplies that they will use. The village provides the housing and some logistical support.

Our project is a small and very new. Our first volunteer was in the village in January of 2012, and our next two volunteers went to the village in February 2012.

We are tax-exempt 501c3 organization in the USA. Our project is funded entirely by the volunteers, so I try to keep our budget low. I have received small donations from friends and family which are going towards school supplies, solar electrical components, and water and building improvements.

La Libertad is a village where the majority of people live in extreme poverty. The destruction and contamination of the ecosystem is all around them and constantly encroaching. Much of this is directly caused by their uninformed actions. With guidance, education, and help, their quality of life can be greatly improved by following the practices of sustainability. However, the goals of the project cannot be accomplished without the understanding, partnership, and desire of the villagers to be actively involved. We cannot do thing to the villagers, we must do things with them. This may be one of the greatest challenges that we face.
