    She Became: Communications Coordinator

    Location: Chicago, IL

    Reports to: Director of Communications

    Position Type: Volunteer, Part-time

    Time Commitment Expectations: On average, 5-7 hours per week

    Position Overview: We are seeking a proactive and creative Communications Coordinator to support our growing team and expand our visibility within the community. This role will work closely with the Director of Communications and in collaboration with the marketing team to ensure a consistent and compelling voice across all internal and external communications.

    As Communications Coordinator, you will play a key role in raising awareness of our mission-driven work, increasing volunteer engagement, and supporting fundraising efforts through storytelling, strategic outreach, and media relations.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Support the execution of organization-wide communication strategies aligned with our mission and growth goals.
    • Work closely with the Director of Communications and marketing team to ensure cohesive messaging across all platforms and campaigns.
    • Suggest and implement strategies to grow awareness of nonprofit events and increase volunteer and community involvement.
    • Draft compelling content for a variety of platforms, including press releases, newsletters, blog posts, and social media.
    • Maintain and update the media contact database and draft tailored media pitches to secure coverage of events and programs.
    • Assist with organizing press opportunities, media placements, and community-facing initiatives.
    • Track and report on communications performance metrics, media coverage, and outreach impact.

    Qualifications:

    • Experience in journalism, communications, marketing, advertising, or a related field.
    • Excellent written, verbal, and editing skills.
    • Strong time management and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
    • Collaborative team player with the ability to work cross-functionally and independently.
    • Familiarity with Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Drive, etc.).
    • Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) is a plus.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Passion for storytelling and mission-driven work.
    • Ability to think creatively and strategically about communications and community engagement.
    • Experience working in or with nonprofit organizations or grassroots initiatives.
