    Description

    Board Treasurer

Ready to Hop Off the Spinning Wheel?

Are you hitting snooze on a life you're never really going to escape from? Are you tired of doom-scrolling your way through a society on fire? Do you want to hop off the spinning wheel and try it your way? If you have a high attention to detail, a love for process, a love for paperwork, and a passion for finding new ways for an organization to grow in its field—we want YOU!

The Texas Railway Preservation Association (TRPA) is a Houston-based non-profit focused on railroad education and rail travel experiences. We are looking for a self-starting, committed volunteer to help our organization graduate to the next step.

We approach every hurdle with an out-of-the-box answer, bringing new technology, ideas, and practices into the preservation industry. We want to continue the important work of preserving railroad equipment in the Houston area and provide a valuable community service.

The TRPA empowers its volunteers and members to make an impact, using their specific skills to see their dreams and ideas come to life.

    The Role: Treasurer

This position reports directly to the Executive Director and has routine communication with the board. We are looking for someone who can help us grow in the following areas:

    • Technology Proficiency Beyond the Basics: Experience with or a willingness to learn financial management software. Willing to train board members how to use the suggested systems and software.
    • Strategic Mindset: Act as a strategic partner to the board, helping us stay focused on our financial goals and long-term sustainability.
    • Risk Management Awareness: Understand potential financial risks to the organization and help the board's actions mitigate them.
    • Experience with Financial Development: The ability to help draft, review, and maintain organizational budgets and financial policies.
    • Onboarding & Training Support: A willingness to assist in the orientation of new board members, ensuring they have access to all necessary financial and governance documents.
    • Knowledge of Non-Profit Governance: Experience with the legal and ethical requirements of non-profit organizations (e.g., IRS regulations, state filing requirements, fiduciary duties). The treasurer often acts as a guardian of financial compliance.
    • Experience in a Similar Role: Prior experience in a finance or accounting role, or a similar governance-focused position.
    • Communication and Interpersonal Skills: The treasurer acts as a liaison between board members and other stakeholders.
    • Proactive & Self-Starting: Anticipate needs, prepare financial reports, and identify potential governance issues before they arise.
    • Project Management Skills: The role can involve coordinating financial projects or initiatives.

    Who is this Position For?

This role is a great fit for:

    • Retired Professionals
    • Part-Time Professionals
    • College Students
    • Aspiring Business Owners / Entrepreneurs
    • Community-involved Individuals

    Your Contribution & Growth

This position starts with you wearing many hats, multi-tasking between the organization's current needs and the future needs of our projects. We don't expect you to know everything or do it all yourself, but we do expect accountability and initiative.

The vision for this position starts with you. Once you have truly rooted yourself and made your department your own, we want you to begin growing the team. Your department will be built on your work ethic and methods, and will be essential in ensuring other parts of the organization function properly. We believe that if done correctly, this will lead to a phase where board members, such as yourself, begin to receive a monthly payroll, along with perks and benefits.

Apply today and discuss the possible future you have with TRPA!
