Since its founding in 2014, WOCOTM has delivered community-based education, advocacy, prevention, and support programs addressing issues such as substance abuse, maternal and child health, youth development, financial literacy, and community engagement both in the U.S. and internationally.     We are seeking a qualified and community-minded legal professional to serve as a Volunteer Attorney (Legal Advisor) to support our leadership team in ensuring compliance, risk management, and sound legal practices.

    Position Overview

    The Attorney (Legal Advisor) provides strategic legal guidance to executive leadership regarding compliance, contracts, risk mitigation, and regulatory matters impacting educational programming—particularly services related to LSAT preparation and student support.

    This position requires an active California law license in good standing and experience or familiarity with LSAT-related matters, standardized testing policies, educational compliance, and/or ADA accommodation considerations.

    This is primarily a non-paid volunteer advisory role.

    Board membership is optional if the selected candidate is willing to comply with board governance requirements and annual board dues.

    Key Responsibilities

    Legal Advisory & Compliance

      • Provide legal guidance on contracts, policies, regulatory compliance, and organizational risk management.
      • Review and draft service agreements, vendor contracts, partnership agreements, and enrollment documents.
      • Advise on liability exposure and mitigation strategies.
      • Ensure compliance with applicable California and federal laws impacting educational services.

    LSAT & Educational Law Support

      • Provide guidance related to LSAT preparation services and standardized testing policies.
      • Advise on ADA-related accommodations, student rights, and testing compliance considerations.
      • Review student enrollment agreements, refund policies, and marketing disclosures for compliance.
      • Provide guidance on intellectual property protections for educational content and curriculum materials.
      • Monitor regulatory developments affecting standardized test preparation services.

    Governance & Organizational Support

      • Advise leadership on governance best practices and compliance frameworks.
      • Provide legal insight for strategic initiatives and partnerships.
      • If serving as a Board Member (optional):
      • Support governance decisions and fiduciary responsibilities.
      • Comply with bylaws, policies, and annual board dues requirements.

    Additional duties may be assigned as organizational needs evolve.

    Qualifications

    Education & Licensure

      • Juris Doctor (JD) required.
      • Active license to practice law in California (required).
      • Must be in good standing with the State Bar of California.

    Experience & Expertise

      • Demonstrated experience practicing law in California.
      • Experience advising educational organizations, student service providers, or test preparation entities preferred.
      • Familiarity with LSAT-related legal considerations, standardized testing regulations, and ADA compliance preferred.
      • Experience drafting and reviewing contracts, agreements, and organizational policies.
      • Knowledge of intellectual property law related to educational materials preferred.
      • Experience advising on risk management and regulatory compliance.
      • Strong communication skills with the ability to translate complex legal concepts into practical guidance.
      • Commitment to ethical leadership and compliance excellence.

    Volunteer Role Notice

    This is a non-paid, volunteer advisory position. Individuals serving in this capacity are not employees of the organization and do not receive financial compensation or employment benefits.

    If the individual elects to serve as a Board Member, they must comply with all board governance requirements, policies, and annual dues obligations. Time commitment expectations will be mutually agreed upon in writing.

    Location Requirement

      • Must be licensed in California.
      • Preference for candidates located in or near Sacramento, California.
      • Occasional in-person meetings in the Sacramento region may be required.
