About Mentor A Promise & PromiseHousing

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a nonprofit organization supporting children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability in New York City. Alongside mentorship, education, and social-emotional learning, MAP advances long-term housing solutions that address the structural drivers of instability.

PromiseHousing is MAP’s housing and real estate development division, focused on delivering safe, dignified, and sustainable housing for families. Engineering expertise is essential to ensuring projects are technically sound, code-compliant, cost-efficient, and safe for long-term occupancy.

    Role Overview

PromiseHousing is seeking Engineering Consultants across multiple disciplines to support housing development and rehabilitation projects. Consultants provide technical review, analysis, and guidance from early feasibility through construction and close-out, ensuring projects meet regulatory requirements and best practices.

We are specifically seeking expertise in:

    • Structural Engineering
    • Mechanical / Electrical / Plumbing (MEP) Engineering
    • Environmental Consulting (asbestos, lead, soil, environmental conditions)

These roles are ideal for licensed engineers or experienced consultants interested in applying their expertise to mission-driven housing work.

    Key Responsibilities (by Discipline)

    Structural Engineering

    • Review structural conditions, systems, and proposed interventions
    • Support feasibility assessments, rehab scopes, and load/path analysis
    • Ensure compliance with applicable building codes and safety standards

Mechanical / Electrical / Plumbing (MEP)

    • Review and advise on HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and life-safety systems
    • Support energy efficiency, system coordination, and constructability
    • Ensure systems meet code, performance, and budget requirements

    Environmental Consulting

    • Conduct or review environmental assessments (asbestos, lead paint, soil conditions)
    • Advise on remediation strategies, regulatory compliance, and risk mitigation
    • Support environmental due diligence and reporting requirements

    Across All Disciplines

    • Coordinate with architects, development managers, and construction leads
    • Provide clear documentation, recommendations, and technical summaries
    • Support permitting, inspections, and agency coordination as needed
    • Ensure all work aligns with PromiseHousing goals and MAP’s mission

    Qualifications

    • Professional experience in structural, MEP, or environmental engineering/consulting
    • Familiarity with residential buildings, rehab projects, or housing development
    • Strong understanding of applicable codes, regulations, and standards
    • Ability to communicate technical information clearly to non-engineers
    • Commitment to safety, quality, and community-centered outcomes

    Preferred Skills

    • Professional licensure (PE or equivalent), where applicable
    • Experience with affordable housing or nonprofit development projects
    • Familiarity with NYC building codes and regulatory environment
    • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary project teams

    Commitment

    • Volunteer professional role within the PromiseHousing division
    • Approximately 5–10 hours per week
    • Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
    • Remote collaboration with periodic NYC-based coordination

    What You’ll Gain

    • Opportunity to apply technical expertise to meaningful housing outcomes
    • Collaboration with architects, developers, and nonprofit leadership
    • Professional recognition and letters of recommendation upon completion
    • Direct contribution to safe, healthy housing for families
    • Tangible impact on projects that strengthen community stability
