About Work on Climate
Work on Climate (WoCl) is a leading non-profit focused on mobilizing humanity’s talent to build a regenerative, climate-positive economy.
You probably know us for our online community — the world’s largest climate career and action community — which has helped thousands of people find climate jobs, start companies, and build impactful networks. We’ve been featured in Fast Company, the New York Times, Wired, and more.
But our work is entering a new chapter.
We are shifting beyond helping individuals find climate jobs. We are now supporting professionals to organize, mobilize, and transform whole sectors and regions toward regenerative futures.
What We Need: We’re currently looking for recruiters to join the People Operations team that will help us connect our organizations needs with talented volunteers.
About the team: The People Operations team focuses on putting the volunteers first by humanizing impersonal systems and continuously improving volunteer engagement, development, and retention. We are responsible for creating a culture and environment that makes volunteers feel happy and proud to contribute to our organization. We are all very passionate about climate and making a difference at Work on Climate! Today, our team is geo-located in the USA and the UK. Our standard meeting schedule time is on Tuesdays at 11:30 am PST.
Role Summary A volunteer recruiter is responsible for identifying and engaging potential volunteers and matching them with suitable opportunities across Work on Climate’s core volunteer team.
Time Commitment
5 hours/week consistently for the next 6+ months (We’d ask for a minimum of 6 months, and love when volunteers stay on longer)
What’s In It For Me?
- A unique pivotal role in directly impacting talented individuals that are eager to jump into climate.
- Networking with tons of qualified people interested in taking climate action.
- A source of encouragement for new members to join our talented volunteer team.
- Identify as a provider of a highly-valued service to every team lead.
- Be influential in the development of the world’s largest community of its sort, on a high-powered team of professionals.
- You will be inspired by the visibility into the wealth of knowledge, incredible individuals and opportunities in the climate space.
What Will I Do?
Actively recruit talented people to volunteer across all domains and expertise at Work on Climate as well as contribute to our people operations team strategies and culture.
- Identify new volunteer recruitment sources and maintain relationships with existing ones.
- Promote volunteer opportunities through various channels, including social media, community events, and partnerships with local organizations.
- Screen and interview potential volunteers to assess their skills, interests, and availability.
- Match volunteers with suitable opportunities based on their skills, interests, and organization needs.
- Provide support for the orientation and training for new volunteers and be their liaison throughout their volunteer experience.
- Maintain accurate records of volunteer applications, placements, availability, hours, and feedback.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of the volunteer recruitment program and make recommendations for improvement.
- Collaborate with other departments to ensure that volunteer recruitment supports the overall goals of the organization.
- Stay current on best practices and developments in volunteer recruitment and engagement.
What Skills & Commitment Do I Need?
In addition to these responsibilities, our volunteer recruiter should have:
- Previous experience as a recruiter, in people operations/HR, or related roles.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, as well as a commitment to the WoCl mission of helping people find jobs and networks in Climate.
- Be able to work effectively with a diverse group of people and be able to think creatively to develop new recruitment strategies.
- Ability to work asynchronously and autonomously.
- Advanced Asana skills are a plus.
Common Challenges
- It can be challenging to gauge commitment from volunteers. We ask for a 6 month commitment for most roles, and reducing turnover.
- Scheduling interview calls requires a flexible schedule, and ability to handle communications across various time zones.
- In addition to vetting applicants, we are looking for a resourceful person who is tied in with a strong network and creative thinking on how to attract the most qualified volunteers.
- While you work on a team and have other recruiters to guide you, you are often left to your own devices to make sure your work is getting done.
