We are looking for individuals in all parts of Calaveras County to create a team of support tutors for our Calaveras County Library Literacy Program.
Calaveras County Literacy provides one on one tutoring to learners aged 16 and over who are not currently enrolled in any other education program.
We offer support in Reading, Writing and Math to low literacy adults.
Tutoring pairs meet once or twice a week for a learner driven session. The tutor is there to support the learner meet their needs and goals and obtain self confidence in day-to-day activities.
Program services are focused on the learners' objectives. There is no time limit on how long a student can be enrolled in the program. Tutors and learners are periodically interviewed to assess progress and review learners' goals and objectives.
Qualifications
Volunteer tutors must speak and write English, be at least 18 years old, and possess a high school diploma or GED. Tutors must have patience, a sense of humor, flexibility, and the ability to work with a diverse population at a learner driven pace. No previous teaching experience is required, just a commitment to support Calaveras County through a foundation and love of literacy.
Each tutor will be fingerprinted, and complete tutor training along with quarterly tutor meetings.
Commitment
We ask for a commitment of at least six months. Tutoring sessions are 1 1/2 hours, one or twice a week. Tutors and learners communicate with each other to arrange the days and times for their sessions. Tutors agree to report their hours every month and follow CCLS reporting guidelines.
Where
Tutoring can be done at any of our 8 branches in Calaveras County or in a location that meets the needs of both the tutor and the learner.
