    Description

Program Summary: Our Shillman House site is currently seeking a Canasta teacher to assist in teaching and facilitating games among our residents. Canasta is a popular card game where players aim to outscore opponents by forming melds and creating canastas. The primary goal of the instructor will be to foster a positive and engaging environment where residents can learn the game and develop relationships with one another. Card games play a vital role in combating social isolation. By encouraging connection, communication, and friendly competition, these shared experiences promote mental well-being and reduce loneliness for older adults.

    Key responsibilities:

    • Understand both playing and teaching the game of Canasta
    • Commit to a monthly schedule
    • Confidently answer any question from players
    • Socialize with residents who attend
    • Bring Joy and Enthusiasm

Impact Goal: The intent of the program is to promote social connection, joy, and a sense of well-being for residents interested in learning and playing Canasta.

    Qualifications:

    • Comfortable working with older adults experiencing memory loss
    • Ability to keep information confidential and maintain appropriate boundaries
    • Willingness to help, flexibility, and patience
    • Experience leading and managing group dynamics
    • A desire to build relationships and welcoming attitude

Benefits: Obtain experience working with older adults, enjoy playing an engaging game with others, and cultivate new intergenerational friendships.
