Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service (VAVS) Volunteers work at the Portland VA Medical Center to help enhance the qualify of life for veterans receiving care.
VAVS Volunteers serve in a variety of roles depending on your interest, skills, and needs of the VA. Tasks may include:
- Greeting and welcoming veterans and visitors
- Escorting patients to appointments
- Supporting refreshment carts and hospitality services
- Assisting with lab runs or clinical administrative tasks
- Helping with recreation therapy activities
- Staffing information desks
- Visiting with patients to provide companionship
- Assisting pharmacy staff
- Supporting hospice, respite care, or No Veteran Dies Alone programs
- Helping with special events
- Serving as a transportation program driver
You'll need to meet these important qualifications:
- Desire to help people
- Ability to show initiative, communicate, and work well with others
- Work with diverse populations
- Flexible; easily adapt to surroundings and tasks
- Willingness to comply with current public health and Red Cross policies.
- Must be able to achieve a successful VA background/security badging check - includes fingerprinting and TB test
