I Kare NC is seeking a dedicated Volunteer Youth Financial Literacy Mentor to support justice-involved youth (ages 10–17) at Rockingham Youth Development Center. This role helps young people build real-life money skills so they can successfully transition back into their communities.
The Volunteer Mentor will help deliver engaging, age-appropriate financial literacy lessons on topics such as budgeting, saving, needs vs. wants, banking basics, credit, and smart decision-making with money. Using I Kare NC’s curriculum and activities, you’ll lead small-group sessions, guide discussions, and encourage youth to set personal financial goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Facilitate weekly or bi-weekly financial literacy sessions at Rockingham YDC
- Use I Kare NC lesson plans or your own lesson plan, games, and activities to make learning interactive and practical
- Build positive, consistent relationships with youth in a secure facility setting
- Model healthy financial habits, decision-making, and communication skills
- Collaborate with I Kare NC staff and YDC staff to support a safe, trauma-informed learning environment
- Track attendance and basic notes on youth participation and progress
Preferred Qualifications:
- Passion for working with at-risk or justice-involved youth
- Basic knowledge of budgeting, saving, and credit (no formal finance degree required)
- Lived experience and/or “credible messenger” background is welcomed but not required
- Strong communication skills, patience, and nonjudgmental attitude
- Ability to maintain clear professional boundaries and confidentiality
Commitment & Requirements:
- Willing to commit to a consistent schedule (e.g., 1–2 hours per week or bi-weekly)
- Attend I Kare NC orientation and training
- Complete any required background checks and facility clearances for Rockingham YDC
