    Description

The Protective Order Advocacy and Representation Project (POARP) at the Women’s Law Center of Maryland (WLC) is seeking a dedicated and compassionate law student or undergraduate student considering law school to join our team as an intern. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with an interest in supporting survivors of domestic violence through meaningful legal work.

About Us: The Women’s Law Center is a non-profit organization providing holistic legal services to survivors of domestic violence. The mission of WLC is to ensure the physical safety, economic security, and bodily autonomy of women throughout Maryland. This mission is achieved through direct legal services, educational hotlines, and advocacy. POARP focuses on helping survivors navigate the legal system to secure protective orders and other essential relief.

Key Responsibilities: Our team strives to make the internship experience a meaningful one, tailored to the individual intern’s interests. Past interns have:

    • Assisted attorneys with basic pleadings and trial preparation.
    • Conducted in-depth client intakes to gather essential case information.
    • Attended court hearings to observe and to support clients.
    • Helped create client-centered materials to enhance service delivery.

    Internship Details:

    • Hours: Approximately 12-16 hours per week, with a requirement of at least 8 hours in-person in our Towson office.
    • Duration: Flexible, with a preference for candidates who can commit to at least one semester.
    • Compensation: While this is an unpaid position, we are happy to assist with obtaining academic credit.

How to Apply: Interested applicants should email a resume, cover letter, and availability to Sara Powel (she/her), Family Law Director, at spowel@wlcmd.org. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.
