    Board members are required to attend the full board meeting typically held every month on the THIRD Tuesday from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. The time commitment requirement is estimated to be a minimum of approximately 10 hours a month.

    NAMI Eastside Board Member

    NAMI Eastside is the East King County affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. We serve communities throughout East King County including Bellevue, Redmond, Kirkland, Kenmore, Issaquah, Bothell, and Sammamish.

    The mission of NAMI Eastside is to provide advocacy, education, support, and public awareness so that all people impacted by mental illness and mental health conditions can live healthy and productive lives.

    Board of Directors Responsibilities:

    • Determining the mission and vision of the organization
    • Selecting and evaluating the performance of the Executive Director
    • Determining the level of support staffing that can be sustained over time
    • Strategic and organizational planning
    • Ensuring strong financial management and fiduciary oversight
    • Fundraising and resource development
    • Approving and monitoring NAMI Eastside programs and services
    • Enhancing NAMI Eastside’s public image
    • Assessing its own performance as the governing body of NAMI Eastside

    Expectations of Individual Board Members

    • Follow the organization’s Bylaws, Policies, and Board Resolutions
    • Know the organization’s mission, vision, services, programs, and needs
    • Regularly review and understand NAMI’s financial statements
    • Serve as active advocates and ambassadors for NAMI Eastside and fully engage in identifying and securing financial resources and partnerships to advance our mission
    • Leverage connections, networks, and resources to develop collective action
    • Contribute to NAMI Eastside in a meaningful way
    • Help identify connections that can influence public policy
    • Prepare for, attend, and participate in Board meetings
    • Participate actively in one or more committees
    • Disclose any potential conflicts of interest before or during meetings
    • Maintain confidentiality about all internal matters of NAMI Eastside

    Preferred Skills & Experience

    While prior board or nonprofit experience is a plus, we welcome individuals passionate about our mission. Preferred experience includes:

    • Fundraising, grant writing, or nonprofit development
    • HR, volunteer management, or policy development
    • Event planning and community engagement
    • Justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) program development
    • Marketing, branding, or social media management
    • Vendor relations and partnership management
    • Legal expertise in nonprofit governance
    • Clinical mental health background
    • Lived experience with mental health as a peer or family member

    Commitment & Expectations

    • Serve a three-year term, renewable up to three consecutive terms.
    • Dedicate at least 10 hours per month to board meetings, committee work, and organizational needs. The NAMI Eastside board meets on the third Tuesday of every month at 7pm.
    • Maintain active participation and responsiveness to board communications.
    • Adhere to all governing documents, including bylaws and policies.
    • Positively represent NAMI Eastside in all capacities.

    Application & Selection Process

    Candidates for board appointment are asked to attend two board meetings as a guest before being appointed by the full board.

    In addition to this form, appointed board members will be required to agree to a state background check, confidentiality agreement, and conflict of interest policy.
