Volunteer Position Summary
The Preventative Conservation Volunteer supports the long-term preservation of artifacts by assisting with environmental monitoring, routine object inspections, proper storage, and basic care practices. This role is ideal for individuals interested in collections care, conservation, or museum studies.
Volunteers may work independently or alongside staff under the supervision of the Museum Curator. A regular weekly or biweekly schedule is preferred.
Essential Functions
- Conduct regular inspections of artifacts, exhibits, and storage areas for signs of wear, deterioration, pests, or environmental changes
- Assist in recording temperature and humidity levels using monitoring equipment
- Help clean and dust non-sensitive exhibit spaces and display furniture following approved methods
- Maintain archival-quality storage by helping rehouse artifacts into proper containers and materials
- Assist with the creation of padded mounts, enclosures, or supports for fragile items
- Report conservation concerns to museum staff promptly and accurately
- Follow museum-approved handling procedures and best practices for conservation
- Assist in maintaining the cleanliness and organization of collections and exhibit spaces
- Attend relevant trainings or workshops as scheduled by museum staff
- Perform other duties as assigned
