    Type: Volunteer (Unpaid)

    About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City nonprofit dedicated to supporting children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability. Through mentorship, academic enrichment, social-emotional learning, literacy development, creative arts, community-centered programs, and policy engagement, MAP works to build systems that protect, empower, and uplift young people and their families.

MAP’s Legal Affairs & Policy Division focuses on housing rights, education access, youth protection, public policy, and nonprofit compliance. The division also communicates legal updates, insights, and advocacy messages to the public through MAP’s storytelling platforms, including MAP’s official blog, Threads of Voices, and policy communications.

    About the Role

We are seeking a Legal Blog Writer to produce clear, accessible, and professionally researched content on legal topics that impact youth, families, homeless shelters, education systems, and nonprofit operations.

This role is ideal for someone passionate about writing, public education, legal research, and translating complex legal concepts into reader-friendly content.

Your work will support MAP’s advocacy, compliance education, public awareness campaigns, and policy visibility.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Write informative, accurate, and accessible blog articles on legal topics relevant to MAP’s mission (housing rights, youth protections, education law, shelter regulations, nonprofit law, etc.).
    • Conduct legal research and summarize statutes, regulations, case law, and government guidance.
    • Collaborate with MAP’s Legal Team, Policy Analysts, Communications Team, and Advocacy Division to ensure accuracy and alignment.
    • Draft scripts or written content for Threads of Voices or other MAP storytelling formats, as needed.
    • Translate complex legal topics into content appropriate for families, youth, and community partners.
    • Assist in creating legal explainers, infographics, and public education materials.
    • Fact-check all writing to ensure compliance, clarity, and reliability.
    • Check and respond to email daily, with responses within 48 hours.
    • Take responsibility for performance improvement through feedback incorporation and ongoing skill development.

    Qualifications

    • Background in law, legal studies, public policy, journalism, or related fields.
    • Strong legal research and writing skills.
    • Ability to communicate complex legal information in plain language.
    • Excellent grammar, clarity, and storytelling ability.
    • Comfortable collaborating with legal, policy, communications, and media teams.
    • Commitment to equity, accessibility, and ethical communication.

    Bonus Skills (not required)

    • Experience writing for blogs, publications, or nonprofit platforms.
    • Knowledge of housing law, education law, youth rights, or nonprofit governance.
    • Interest in advocacy, public policy, or community-based legal education.
    • Bilingual or multilingual abilities (Spanish or Haitian Creole preferred).

    Commitment

    • Volunteer role, approximately 5–10 hours per week.
    • Minimum 6-month commitment preferred.
    • Remote via Google Meet, with occasional NYC events or meetings available.

    What You’ll Gain

    • Experience writing legal content for a mission-driven nonprofit.
    • A portfolio of published articles, blogs, and educational materials.
    • Collaboration with MAP’s Legal, Policy, Communications, and Advocacy teams.
    • Opportunities for professional growth, mentorship, and leadership development.
    • Letters of recommendation and strong professional references.
    • The fulfillment of contributing to legal literacy and empowerment for vulnerable communities.
