Change a Life: Become a Mentor for Foster Youth

The Need

Transitioning into adulthood is challenging for any teen, but especially for youth aging out of foster care. Many lack the resources, skills, and plans needed for independence, putting them at higher risk of dropping out, homelessness, unemployment, early parenthood, or involvement with the justice system. A caring adult can make all the difference.

How You Can Help

Transition Coaches are trained volunteers who guide foster youth (ages 14+) nearing adulthood. Coaches help youth create transition plans, explore education and employment options, and provide support as they navigate independence.

How It Works

Volunteers meet with their matched youth at least twice a month, in the youth’s placement or another public setting, on a schedule they set together. Youth live across greater Houston, and training and ongoing support are provided.

Requirements

Coaches commit for at least one year, complete an application, interview, and background check, and attend orientation/training (offered monthly, alternating daytime and evening).
