    Volunteer Coordinator VISTA

    Hunger Free America (founded in 1983 as the New York City Coalition Against Hunger) is a dynamic and highly effective national progressive anti-hunger advocacy and direct service organization that is based in New York City but works in all 50 states.

    The Nation has written that the organization has grown into “one of the leading direct service and advocacy organizations on hunger and poverty in the nation.” Our mission is to build a nonpartisan, grass-roots movement to enact the progressive public policies and programs needed to end domestic hunger and ensure that all Americans have sufficient access to nutritious food.

    Our long-term goal is not just to ameliorate the problem, but also to build the people’s movement necessary to enact the economic and public policies needed to end hunger entirely. Given that hunger drains our economy and tears at our moral and civic fabric, we know that eliminating it will boost the nation both economically and spiritually. Towards that end, we have adopted the motto: “Ending hunger lifts us all.”

    Hunger Free America’s Strategic Volunteerism Department is seeking a full-time AmeriCorps Volunteer Coordinator VISTA. They will increase the national presence of Hunger volunteerism and Strategic Volunteerism Program Partnerships, which focus on increasing the number of volunteers connecting to higher impact opportunities that address the root causes of hunger. This stipend position offers a great opportunity for someone looking to enter the non-profit sector, or someone who is retired and passionate about making a difference.

    Specific Responsibilities:

      • Recruit volunteers for our hunger non-profit partners and for HFAvolunteer roles as needed- engaging with students, corporates and more
      • Develop our Corporate volunteering offering, including prospecting newpotential corporate contacts
      • Recruit hunger non-profits as partners in our program, to grow our presence as a national program
      • Lead the organizing of our annual MLK Serve-a-thon, working with partners toorganize 30+ events nationally, and engage 500+ volunteers in hunger-related service
      • Create our communication newsletters for volunteers and non-profit partners
      • Develop marketing materials as needed for the Volunteerism Department

    Preferred qualities:

      • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
      • Experience in volunteering
      • Experience in recruitment, or partnership working a plus
      • Experience in project coordination/ event management a plus
      • Working knowledge of databases, and experience with Salesforce a plus
      • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
      • Excellent organization and team-building skills
      • Interest in social justice issues and addressing systemic issues of domestic food security

    Program requirements:

      • Must reside within commutable distance to NYC (approximately 50 mile radius)
      • Must be 18+
      • Pass a national service criminal history check
      • Hold one of the following citizenship statuses:
    1. Lawful permanent Aliens and persons residing in a state that have the following classifications- Refugee, asylum or asylee, temporary protected status or deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) status.
    2. US Citizen
    3. US National

    Host site: Hunger Free America, 50 Broad St, New York, NY 10004

    Term of service: 35hrs/week (generally Monday-Friday) for 1 year

    Expected start date: August 11th, 2025

    Work environment: Hybrid- remote with occasional in-person events in NYC
