    Description

Volunteer - Hospital Accompaniment for Survivors

Join our 24/7 network of support for survivors!

Doorways is an Arlington-based non-profit agency helping individuals and families create pathways out of domestic violence, sexual assault, and homelessness leading to safe, stable and empowered lives. We provide trauma-informed, holistic services to survivors in the community including emergency housing, hospital accompaniment, court advocacy, counseling, case management, a 24/7 hotline, prevention workshops, and more.

We are seeking individuals to act as Hospital Accompaniment Response Program (HARP) Volunteers. HARP Volunteers respond to local hospitals to support survivors of sexual and domestic violence who are there for medical-forensic exams. HARP Volunteers will provide accompaniment, emotional support, crisis intervention, advocacy, and referrals to the survivor and/or their loved ones. Volunteers sign up for two 12-hour shifts (6am-6pm or 6pm-6am) each month with flexible scheduling across all weekdays, overnights, weekends, and holidays. This is an on-call, volunteer position that requires reliable transportation. Volunteers must be able to report to INOVA Fairfax Hospital within 30-40 minutes of receiving a dispatch (the hospital is not metro accessible).

Please note that volunteers must complete 40 hours of training in person on weeknights and submit background checks to work directly with clients. We host training three times per year: Fall (Sep-Nov), Winter (Jan-March), and Spring (April-June). Entrance into cohort is first come first serve. A one year commitment of active volunteering is required.
