Type: Volunteer (Senior Operations & Risk Leadership Role)

    About Mentor A Promise

Mentor A Promise (MAP) is a New York City–based nonprofit serving children and youth ages 5–18 experiencing housing instability through mentorship, literacy, social-emotional learning, creative expression, and community-based programs. MAP operates across education, housing, research, media, and special projects—often in complex, high-trust environments.

Protecting children, families, volunteers, staff, and partners requires strong operational risk awareness, preparedness, and continuity planning.

    Role Overview

The Risk, Continuity & Preparedness Lead operates within MAP’s Operations function and is responsible for identifying organizational risks, strengthening preparedness, and ensuring MAP can respond to and recover from incidents without compromising safety, trust, or mission delivery.

This role partners closely with Operations leadership, Legal/Compliance, HR, IT Security, and Program teams to embed risk mitigation, continuity planning, and incident readiness into day-to-day operations.

This is a senior volunteer leadership role focused on operational resilience and readiness.

    Key Responsibilities

    Operational Risk Identification & Mitigation

    • Identify operational, programmatic, reputational, and safety risks across MAP operations
    • Develop and recommend risk mitigation strategies embedded in operational workflows
    • Support Operations leadership in prioritizing and managing risk exposure

    Business Continuity & Preparedness

    • Develop, maintain, and update business continuity and emergency preparedness plans
    • Ensure continuity planning supports youth safety, data protection, and mission-critical operations
    • Coordinate preparedness planning across Operations, programs, and special projects

    Incident Response & Recovery (Operations-Led)

    • Coordinate incident response and recovery efforts in partnership with Operations leadership
    • Support documentation of escalation protocols, response procedures, and after-action reviews
    • Ensure lessons learned are integrated into operational improvements

    Governance & Cross-Functional Alignment

    • Align operational risk and preparedness work with executive risk, legal, and compliance functions
    • Coordinate with HR, IT Security, and Program teams on risk-related policies and procedures
    • Support leadership and board-level operational risk awareness as needed

    Qualifications

    • Experience in operations, risk management, emergency preparedness, compliance, or continuity planning
    • Strong operational and systems-thinking skills
    • Ability to translate risk frameworks into practical, day-to-day processes
    • Comfort working with cross-functional operations teams
    • Clear written and verbal communication skills
    • Alignment with MAP’s mission, child-safety standards, and ethical commitments

    Preferred Backgrounds

    • Operations leadership, risk management, emergency management, or compliance
    • Nonprofit, education, housing, healthcare, or public-sector environments
    • Experience supporting incident response or organizational resilience efforts
    • Familiarity with safeguarding, privacy, or duty-of-care frameworks

    Commitment

    • Volunteer senior leadership role within Operations
    • Approximately 5–10 hours per week
    • Minimum 6-month commitment preferred
    • Remote work with NYC-based coordination as needed

    What You’ll Gain
