    Role Overview

Menzies is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented DevOps Engineer to strengthen the reliability, automation, and resilience of our AWS-hosted web application. This role bridges our development and cybersecurity (DevSecOps) functions to ensure smooth, secure, and repeatable deployments from GitHub to AWS.

The DevOps Engineer will be responsible for building CI/CD pipelines, standardizing branch workflows, managing environment consistency, and overseeing critical infrastructure maintenance tasks such as patching, configuration drift prevention, AMI management, and continuity planning.

This is an excellent opportunity for a technically curious volunteer to gain real-world DevOps and cloud experience while contributing to a mission-driven nonprofit organization.

    Key Responsibilities

    1. CI/CD Pipeline and Deployment Automation
    • Design, implement, and maintain CI/CD pipelines using AWS CodePipeline, CodeBuild, and/or GitHub Actions.
    • Collaborate with developers to define and enforce a branching strategy (feature/*, uat, main) ensuring consistent deployments and clean releases.
    • Create and apply Pull Request templates and merge policies to improve testing and review discipline.
    • Automate environment setup and deployment processes using Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform or AWS CloudFormation.
    • Integrate security and quality checks (e.g., dependency scanning, secret validation, and SAST/DAST tools) into the pipeline in collaboration with the DevSecOps Engineer.
    1. Configuration Management and Environment Health
    • Manage and monitor AWS Elastic Beanstalk and related AWS environments for stability, scalability, and performance.
    • Maintain AMI versions and enforce configuration consistency across development, UAT, and production environments to avoid drift.
    • Use AWS Systems Manager Patch Manager or equivalent automation scripts to ensure all EC2 instances are patched and compliant.
    • Configure CloudWatch dashboards and alerts to track uptime, cost, and performance trends.
    • Work closely with the DevSecOps Engineer to respond to AWS Security Hub, GuardDuty, or Config findings related to infrastructure.
    1. Backup, Disaster Recovery, and Continuity
    • Implement and maintain automated backup routines for application environments, configuration data, and RDS instances.
    • Conduct test restorations to validate backup integrity and ensure that recovery procedures function as expected.
    • Develop, document, and periodically update disaster recovery (DR) procedures, including restoration workflows for AWS environments.
    • Draft and maintain an IT continuity plan outlining recovery timelines, dependencies, and escalation steps.
    • Generate a monthly continuity and environment health report, summarizing patching, backup verification, and key system metrics.

    Required Qualifications

Candidates should demonstrate one or more of the following:

    • Bachelor’s degree (or current enrollment) in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline.
    • Entry-level certification or equivalent hands-on experience such as:
      • AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner or AWS Certified SysOps Administrator – Associate
      • CompTIA Security+ (preferred baseline for all technical volunteers)
    • A GitHub or GitLab portfolio demonstrating experience with CI/CD automation, scripting, or AWS environments.

    Technical Expectations:

    • Proficiency with AWS services (Elastic Beanstalk, EC2, S3, IAM, RDS, CloudWatch).
    • Familiarity with Git and version-control workflows.
    • Basic scripting ability in Bash, Python, or PowerShell.
    • Understanding of CI/CD concepts, cloud security basics, patching, and infrastructure reliability.
    • Strong documentation and communication habits.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience automating deployments with AWS CodePipeline, CodeBuild, or GitHub Actions.
    • Familiarity with Terraform or CloudFormation for Infrastructure-as-Code.
    • Working knowledge of AWS Systems Manager, Backup, and Patch Manager.
    • Exposure to monitoring tools (e.g., CloudWatch).
    • Experience planning disaster recovery or continuity exercises.
    • Prior experience in a DevOps or cloud operations volunteer or professional role.

    Personal Attributes

    • Proactive and resourceful, with strong attention to operational detail.
    • Communicates clearly across development, security, and management teams.
    • Eager to learn modern DevOps tools and best practices.
    • Organized, dependable, and committed to following through on deliverables.
