    Finance & Accounting Assistant (Volunteer)

    A Free Bird is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in New York City. We empower children diagnosed with cancer to explore their artistic passions through art, music, writing, performance, and other creative outlets. By supporting creativity and self-expression, we help young people build resilience, confidence, and hope throughout their healing journey.

    Role Overview

    The Finance & Accounting Assistant provides foundational support to A Free Bird’s finance operations by helping maintain accurate records, tracking expenses, and assisting with routine financial tasks. This role is ideal for students, early-career professionals, or career-switchers who want hands-on exposure to nonprofit finance and accounting in a supportive, mission-driven environment.

    You will work under the guidance of senior finance team members while gaining practical experience in real-world financial operations.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Assist with tracking and recording organizational expenses and contributions
    • Support accounts receivable and payable documentation, including invoices and receipts
    • Help maintain organized financial records and digital filing systems
    • Assist in preparing basic monthly financial summaries and reports
    • Communicate with internal departments to gather required financial documentation
    • Support budgeting and reconciliation tasks as needed
    • Follow established nonprofit financial policies and data confidentiality standards

    Skills & Qualifications

    • 0–1 year of experience in finance, accounting, bookkeeping, or related coursework (internships and volunteer experience welcome)
    • Basic understanding of accounting principles or financial processes
    • Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn
    • Reliable organizational and time-management skills
    • Comfortable working independently in a remote environment with guidance
    • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Google Workspace (especially Excel/Sheets)

    Additional Information

    • This is a remote volunteer assistant-level role
    • Requires a minimum 3-month commitment, 5–10 hours per week
    • Must have reliable access to a computer, internet, and availability for periodic phone or video check-ins
