    Description

    BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 45 countries and 25 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. Domestically, our 25 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.

    SCOPE OF WORK: Through incisive written communication and careful networking skills, the Social Media Intern will work alongside the Development Manager, as well as the four Volunteer & Donation Coordinators across the NorCal offices, in managing IRC's outreach and communication efforts. The intern will develop creative ways of expanding the IRC’s presence in Northern California (specifically, the Oakland, Sacramento, San Jose, and Turlock metro areas) by way of social media platforms. Learn and perfect critical marketing, public relations and administrative skills applicable in both the for-profit and nonprofit sectors while contributing to meaningful social change.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    General responsibilities could include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Assist with the development and creation of IRC Northern California’s media and outreach materials;
    • Provide content for IRC NorCal Facebook and Instagram pages along with any other social media platforms used to increase the organizations online presence;
    • Supervise social media content by responding to comments and inquiries as well as monitoring postings and activities made by followers;
    • Find new and creative ways to increase IRC’s presence within communities across Northern California;
    • Research relevant outreach opportunities for the four IRC NorCal offices to take part in such as festivals, community events, and school and health fairs;
    • Assist with the creation and publication of monthly newsletters for the IRC NorCal offices;
    • Other duties as assigned.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • Ability to work within 9am-5pm hours Pacific Standard Time;
    • Excellent computing skills and knowledge of social media platforms and web design. Self-starter with ideas for how to effectively utilize technology in the office;
    • Strong writing and communication skills; the job will entail editing and creating material such as newsletters, flyers, and web content;
    • Strong interpersonal skills: the ability to work effectively with clients, partners, and colleagues in a cross cultural, multi-disciplinary environment;
    • Solid organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks, set priorities, effectively manage time and meet deadlines;
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word, Excel, Publisher, or other design software;
    • Experience with Canva preferred.

    Standard of Professional Conduct

    The IRC and the IRC workers must adhere to the values and principles outlined in the IRC Way – our Code of Conduct. These are Integrity, Service, Accountability, and Equality.
