This project is a living example of how individual homeowners can help improve the local environment through the use of native vegetation and xeriscape gardens. The project replaced grass and invasive species along 150 yards of stream bank with native Hawaiian plants that can be used for soil stabilization, biofiltration, and water conservation. Visitors can walk the garden pathways to see how plantings might appear in their own backyards.
Volunteers will be involved in clearing invasive plant species from the gardens using small hand tools and hand pulling weeds as we work to open areas for re-introduction of native plants.
A few things to think about it you are going to volunteer...
We offer a variety of regularly scheduled events each month and we can work with groups to arrange a private weekday service trip or educational visit. The best way see what events we have coming up and which would be the best fit for you is by visiting our website calendar and following us on social media @huiokoolaupoko.
Please RSVP to volunteer@huihawaii.org RSVPs are required for all participants due to the limited amount of volunteers we are able to host at the time.
Feel free to call or e-mail if you have any additional questions. We look forward to working with you.
Sometimes the navigation maps will you take you to where the houses are on the other side of the park or to the other side of Kawainui - the entrance to our garden is at the parking lot where the Kawainui Marsh Bike Trail starts. If you input that into maps, it should take you to the correct place.
