    Description

    Nonprofit Tax Specialist
    • Position Title:**Nonprofit Tax Specialist (Volunteer)**
    • *Reports To:**Director of Finance and Administrator**
    • *Role Overview**

    The Nonprofit Tax Specialist ensures that the organization maintains compliance with all federal, state, and local tax laws governing tax-exempt entities. This role involves preparing tax filings, monitoring tax-exempt status, advising on nonprofit financial regulations, and ensuring compliance with IRS and state tax requirements.

    1. Tax Compliance & Filings
    • Prepare and file IRS Form 990, 990-EZ, or 990-N annually.
    • Ensure compliance with state and local tax filings, including sales tax exemptions and charitable solicitation registrations.
    • Monitor and maintain the organization’s 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status.
    • Assist with unrelated business income tax (UBIT) filings if applicable.
    1. Financial & Regulatory Compliance
    • Ensure adherence to IRS regulations and nonprofit accounting best practices.
    • Advise on the proper classification of revenue, including donations, grants, sponsorships, and earned income.
    • Work closely with auditors and accountants during financial audits.
    1. Fundraising & Donor Compliance
    • Ensure charitable contributions comply with IRS regulations.
    • Advise on donor acknowledgment letters, gift receipts, and restricted funds reporting.
    • Oversee compliance with state charitable solicitation laws.
    1. Risk Management & Advisory
    • Identify potential tax risks and provide strategic recommendations.
    • Guide the nonprofit on best practices for governance and financial transparency.
    • *Skills & Qualifications:**

    ✔ Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, tax law, or a related field. CPA, EA, or JD preferred.

    ✔ Prior experience in nonprofit tax compliance, public accounting, or nonprofit finance.

    ✔ Expertise in IRS nonprofit regulations and tax filings.

    ✔ Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) for nonprofits.

    ✔ Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

    ✔ Familiarity with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Blackbaud, Sage Intacct).

    ✔ Passion for nonprofit work and commitment to financial transparency.
