    Description

    The Board Chair serves as the principal leader of the Board of Directors, guiding Havenlight House’s strategic direction, governance, and mission fulfillment. This role ensures the board functions effectively, ethically, and in alignment with trauma-informed principles that prioritize safety, dignity, and empowerment for girls ages 5–22.

    Key Responsibilities

    Leadership & Governance

    • Preside over board meetings, set agendas, and facilitate strategic discussion
    • Ensure board compliance with bylaws, HHSC/DFPS regulations, and fiduciary duties
    • Lead annual board evaluations and succession planning

    Strategic Oversight

    • Collaborate with the Executive Director (or equivalent leadership) to monitor organizational performance
    • Champion the mission and vision of Havenlight House in public and private forums
    • Support long-term planning, including accreditation, expansion, and sustainability goals

    Board Development

    • Recruit, onboard, and mentor board members with diverse expertise and lived experience
    • Foster a culture of transparency, trauma-informed practice, and continuous improvement
    • Delegate committee leadership and ensure accountability across board functions

    External Relations

    • Represent Havenlight House to funders, partners, and community stakeholders
    • Advocate for policies and partnerships that support underserved girls and trauma recovery
    • Support fundraising efforts and donor cultivation in collaboration with development staff

    Qualifications

    • Demonstrated leadership experience in nonprofit governance, child welfare, or trauma-informed care
    • Familiarity with Texas HHS/DFPS standards and nonprofit compliance
    • Strong facilitation, communication, and strategic planning skills
    • Commitment to equity, empowerment, and ethical stewardship

    Term & Commitment

    • Term Length: 2 -3 years, renewable once
    • Time Commitment: ~8–10 hours/month, including quarterly board meetings and committee work
    • Compensation: Volunteer position (unpaid), with reimbursement for approved expenses

      • Skills or expertise you would bring (finance, law, social work, fundraising, healthcare, education, marketing, community advocacy, etc.).

    • Work Samples (PDF, DOCX, or link): examples of board service, nonprofit work, or community leadership (e.g., strategic plan excerpts, fundraising campaign involvement, advocacy initiatives).
    • Letters of Recommendation (if available): at least one professional or community reference.

    Additional Requests:

    • Confirm your availability for quarterly board meetings (virtual and/or in-person in Harris County, TX).
    • Indicate your area(s) of interest (Governance, Finance, Fundraising/Development, Marketing, Programs/Services, Health & Wellness, etc.).
    • Share any conflict-of-interest concerns (employment or affiliations with agencies that may overlap with Havenlight House).

    Next Steps:

    Selected candidates will be contacted for a virtual interview with the Nominating Committee. Final appointments are made by vote of the Havenlight House Board of Directors.
