    About A Free Bird

A Free Bird is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in New York City. We empower children diagnosed with cancer to explore their artistic passions through music, art, writing, performance, and other creative outlets. By supporting creative expression, we help children build confidence, resilience, and hope throughout their healing journey.

    Role Overview

The Finance Advisor serves as a trusted subject-matter expert, providing strategic guidance and professional insight to support A Free Bird’s financial health and long-term sustainability. This advisory role is ideal for an experienced finance professional who is interested in contributing expertise on a flexible, on-call basis rather than managing day-to-day accounting operations.

Working collaboratively with organizational leadership and the Finance team, the Finance Advisor helps ensure financial practices align with industry standards, regulatory requirements, and the organization’s mission.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Provide professional financial guidance and recommendations on finance-related questions as needed
    • Review, monitor, and advise on organizational finance policies to ensure alignment with best practices and current industry standards
    • Support financial planning initiatives, including budgeting, forecasting, and long-term financial strategy
    • Review prepared financial plans and reports, providing feedback on accuracy, clarity, and risk considerations
    • Stay informed on relevant legislative, regulatory, and compliance updates that may impact nonprofit financial planning
    • Offer professional connections or resources that may support A Free Bird’s financial goals and sustainability
    • Serve as an advisory resource to leadership on strategic financial decisions

    Skills & Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, Business, or a related field
    • 5+ years of professional experience in finance, accounting, financial planning, or a related discipline
    • Strong understanding of financial policies, compliance, and best practices
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain financial concepts clearly
    • Proficiency with Google Workspace (Gmail, Calendar, Meet/Hangouts) and general digital collaboration tools
    • Ability to provide thoughtful, independent advice while collaborating with a mission-driven team

    Additional Information

    • This is a remote, advisory volunteer role supporting the Finance department on an as-needed basis
    • Minimum commitment of 4 months, with flexible scheduling
    • Must have reliable access to a computer, internet, and availability for periodic phone or video consultations

    Interview Timeline

Interviews for this role will resume on January 13, 2026.
