    Description

    BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 45 countries and 25 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. Domestically, our 25 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing, and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.

    SCOPE OF WORK: The Neighbors For Newcomers (N4N) initiative is IRC Sacramento’s monthly community donation and volunteer event that provides essential household goods and furniture to newly arrived refugee and immigrant families. This event combines hands‑on service, teamwork, and meaningful community impact. These events occur on the second Saturday of each month, last about 4 hours, and are perfect for individuals or groups!

    Volunteers will assist in receiving the donated furniture and other items from the home of the donor, pack it into the IRC's box truck, and help deliver these goods directly into newcomer homes across Sacramento to help families create a safe and comfortable living space. This role is ideal for volunteers who enjoy hands‑on service, teamwork, and making a direct, meaningful impact in the lives of newcomer families.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    General responsibilities could include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Driving to 1-3 donors' and 1-3 clients' homes, either in your personal vehicle or in a carpool with another volunteer / IRC staff;
    • Greet donors and receive donated items (larger items like furniture, bicycles, etc.)
    • Sort items under the direction of the the Volunteer $ Donation Coordinator, and load into the box truck;
    • Optional: Assist with transporting donated goods (if using personal vehicle);
    • Greet clients and transport the donations from the box truck into client homes;
    • Work collaboratively with staff and fellow volunteers throughout the event.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • Personal vehicle to transport oneself and/or carpool with other volunteers; if you do NOT have a personal vehicle for this purpose, but are able to get yourself to and from the IRC office, please still apply---we will do our best to provide a carpool space for you!
    • Comfort doing manual labor outdoors;
    • Ability to safely lift 30-50lbs;
    • Age 16+ can volunteer independently; age 16-17 requires consent from parent/guardian.
    • Water, sunscreen, proper attire (specific recommendations will be sent to volunteers after registration);
    • Successfully clearing a background check.

    Standard of Professional Conduct

    The IRC and the IRC workers must adhere to the values and principles outlined in the IRC Way – our Code of Conduct. These are Integrity, Service, Accountability, and Equality.
