Human Rights Research Center (HRRC) is an established nonprofit start-up that brings a multidisciplinary approach to human rights and seeks to bridge the gap between academic research and the wider public. We educate through facts, advocate using our research findings, and take action to implement change.
Who You Are
We’re seeking a curious, reliable, and mission-driven Volunteer News Writer to contribute timely, accurate, and accessible news content related to global and domestic human rights issues. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys staying informed, synthesizing complex information, and communicating clearly with a broad audience while upholding journalistic integrity.
What You’ll Do
- Research and write news articles covering current human rights developments, policies, court decisions, conflicts, and social justice issues
- Monitor credible news sources, reports, and official statements for relevant story ideas
- Translate complex events and data into clear, engaging, and fact-based articles for a general audience
- Conduct background research and fact-check all content prior to submission
- Collaborate with editors to revise drafts and incorporate feedback
- Meet assigned deadlines and follow HRRC’s editorial standards and style guidelines
- Assist with headline writing and sourcing images or supporting materials, as needed
Qualifications
- Strong writing and research skills with the ability to explain complex issues clearly and accurately
- Demonstrated interest in human rights, journalism, international affairs, law, or social justice
- At least one year of experience in news writing, journalism, research, blogging, or related work (professional, academic, or volunteer)
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to factual accuracy
- Ability to work independently in a remote, fast-paced, and start-up environment
- Familiarity with journalistic ethics and responsible sourcing
- Experience with Google Suite and collaborative tools such as Slack preferred
- Degree or coursework in Journalism, Communications, Political Science, Human Rights, International Relations, or a related field is preferred
Compensation and Commitment
This is a volunteer, virtual opportunity with an expectation of approximately 4–6 hours per week. A minimum six-month commitment is required.
